We are seeking a Development Director III who is interested in furthering the mission of our Charlottesville, Virginia location by leading in our goals to solicit individual and corporate donors, seeking partnerships for program initiatives, and be actively involved to do the most good for our community. POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Commanding Officer and the indirect supervision of the Divisional Development Director, the Director of Development creates and oversees the implementation of a strategic approach to increase fundraising results through major gifts, corporate donations, grant solicitation, direct mail, special events, community relations and in-kind resources.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Strategic Planning:
Create an annual comprehensive development plan in consultation with the Corps Officer and Divisional Development Director (DDD) that sets specific goals and strategies for appropriate development disciplines that will increase revenues to support the strategic direction of the organization for review and approval by DFB.
Lead the implementation of the approved development plan, in accordance with ethical fundraising principles
Evaluate and report out on fundraising goals and activities achieved to the Corps Officer monthly.
Monitor trends in the community or region and adapt fundraising strategies as necessary. Understand and follow Salvation Army fundraising policies.
Develop and submit, to the Corps Officer, an annual revenue and expenditure budget for the development program; and Monitor expenses and analyze budget reports on fund development and recommend changes as necessary.

Fundraising:
Develop and manage timelines for various fundraising activities to ensure strategic plans and critical fund-raising processes are carried out in a timely manner. Develop procedures for the development department which reflect ethical fundraising practices. Prepare and submit grant applications as outlined in the development plan.
In cooperation with the Regional Resource Development Director and Corps Officer, identify and develop a personal portfolio of at least 20 corporate, community and/or individual prospects that will be put into a moves management system that the Development Director manages.
Meet or surpass an annual personal fundraising goal from major gift efforts that is established by the Corps Officer and approved by the Divisional Finance Board.
In cooperation with the Regional Resource Development Director, manage a portfolio of the top 10 prospects and donors for the Corps Officers involvement.
Increase overall revenue on an annual basis as established in the annual fund-raising plan.
Records and/or ensures all gifts are entered into InterChange, if not assigned to another staff member.
Records the Development Directors and Commanding Officers donor/prospect interactions in InterChange, in a timely and proper manner, ensuring the development team members are doing the same.
Manage the acknowledgement program to provide a high level of donor care.
Coordinate in-kind donations and make decisions regarding the issuing of receipts
Manage the United Way application process and follow up processes according to policy

Direct Mail:
Oversee the administration of a donor mailing list in InterChange, respecting the privacy and confidentiality of donor information.
Work with direct mail vendors on all aspects of direct mail, set up annual calendar of mailings, review appeals and ensure timely processing of approvals from the Corps Officer.
Prepare monthly direct mail reports and provide analysis on the direct mail program.

Community and Volunteer Relations:
Engage volunteers for special fund development projects using established volunteer management practices and assist the Corps Officer in staffing the Advisory Organizations.
Build relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization.

Special Events:
Oversee the planning and execution of special fundraising events as specified in the development plan.

Committee Involvement:
Along with the Corps Officer, develop and maintain the Community Relations & Development Committee, Marketing and Public Relations Committee and the Bequest and Endowment Committee of the Advisory Board.
Actively support and cooperate with the divisional Planned Giving and Resource Development representatives.
In cooperation with the Regional Planned Giving Director, staff the Bequest and Endowment Committee of the Advisory Board

Marketing and Communications:
Foster an understanding of philanthropy within the organization through internal communications.
Develop a comprehensive communication and marketing plan to promote the organization and maximize public awareness of the fundraising activities of the organization and of the value of Family Thrift Store.
Coordinate the design, printing and distribution of marketing and communication materials for development efforts in accordance with the communications and marketing plan.
Produce the organization's annual report by February 15 each year.
Produce and distribute a minimum of 12 press releases, in accordance with the communications and marketing plan.
Manage and update the Corps website and social media program.

Management:
Supervise one to three department staff.
Directs the selection, training, and supervision of all staff responsible for performing the daily operational duties of the Development Department.
Instructs and trains employees in the proper methods and procedures for conducting work, and monitors work for compliance with established program policies, procedures, standards, and regulations.
Conduct annual performance evaluations and makes salary, hiring and termination recommendations.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:

Proficiency in the use of Fund-raising software, Micro Soft Office products to include Databases and Spreadsheets, E-mail and Internet.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.
and
Seven years of experience in a comprehensive development program with progressively responsible experience and demonstrated success;
Or
Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Drivers License is required
Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) designation is preferred.

Physical Requirements:
Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting, and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.). Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.

Working Conditions:
Work may be performed in a normal office environment within a climate-controlled structure. There is little, or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, and dirt.
